Watch the video below to hear from Skye Taylor, General Manager of Atira Waymouth Street, who gave us an update on the exciting array of Residential Life activities occurring in Adelaide over the past few months.
Melbourne Residential Life
Through the last quarter, a diverse range of residential life programs were offered to our residents that focused on encouraging relationship building, cultural learning and social engagement.
Activities that we organised for residents included:
RA kitchens, sushi making classes, cookie decorating, Brighten the day breakfasts, a Queen’s Birthday High Tea, brownies night and barbecues.
IELTS tips, how to write an A Grade Essay seminars, video editing classes and sessions on the art of public speaking.
Cultural awareness events
Eid al- Fitr and Dragon Boat Dunwu Festival
Stress relief outings
Residents enjoyed a day tour on Australia’s most iconic road trip – The Great Ocean Road. We also cruised out to Mount Dandenong to explore the Autumn beauty of the Yarra Valley’s scenery and relaxed and rejuvenated at Melbourne’s famous Mornington Peninsula hot springs.
We are fostering a living community to help our residents find the right balance between study, self-development, staying active and social life. We have also been looking for different resources and opportunities for our residents to explore unique experiences.
- A visit to the Cat Café
- A Europa Night Market tour
- Laser tag
- A tour of the National Gallery
- A DIY Succulent Terrarium Workshop where students used recycling jars to make their own plant.
In May, we purchased tickets for an Atira resident team to participate in Red Bull’s Global Charity Event – the Wings for Life World Run where thousands of runners and wheelchair users in 72 countries participated at the same time to raise money and awareness for spinal cord research. On Mother’s Day, residents handcrafted cards and hand painted mugs to celebrate this special occasion together.
The whole team at Atira Melbourne will continue to work hard to develop and manage Residential Life programs, events and services that will support the academic and social wellbeing of our residents.
Brisbane Residential Life
After a busy O-week in February, Brisbane res life focused on making meaningful connections at events to help residents feel comfortable at any event we organise, just like home.
We played many trivia sessions and fun games like What’s In The Box challenge, conducted a few spicy challenges and organised yoga classes in the city. Despite not surpassing the record attendance we enjoyed in February, we achieved much better engagement at the events and on social media. Residents started feeling more comfortable helping our RAs with activities or cooking, which is a great way to meet even more people and feel included in the community. Our new style of Instagram Stories also increased overall views, participation in polls and most importantly, residents started tagging Atira in their stories and posts more often.
During the end of semester exam period we placed a greater emphasis on providing more care to stressed residents. Stress free corners were created at each property with helpful posters to release stress along with massage chairs, which have been very much loved by our residents. We have also created and distributed care packs to provide encouragement and wish our residents good luck with studies. These packs proved very popular, especially when our RAs delivered them straight to resident rooms! During the exam period all food events included comfort food and were accompanied by activities to release stress like colouring-in sessions, DIY stress balls and board game nights. We received a lot of great feedback from grateful residents for helping them to live through this stressful time.
The semester ended with a bang courtesy of a rooftop party and thanks to the efforts of our RAs, the party took a turn when everyone created a circle and started dancing all together, celebrating the end of studies.
The Brisbane team is super excited for the upcoming months as we have many more event ideas up our sleeves and are keen to see them come to to life!
