We love Melbourne for its trendy cafes, endless food options, and amazing art scene. Whether you’re a local or a traveler, here’s a list of things to do in Melbourne on a student budget.
In the meantime, here’s a definitive list of things to do in Melbourne without breaking the bank. #StudentBudgetStruggles.
1. Hop on the free City Circle Tram
First thing’s first: sort out your ride. The City Circle Tram (or Route-35) provides a free and convenient way to get around central Melbourne.
Not only is it super easy to hop on and off, but it’s also an iconic part of Melbourne’s heritage! And did we mention it’s free? That means more money for food, coffee and shopping.
2. Explore Melbourne’s amazing street art

If you didn’t take a photo at Hosier Lane, did you really visit Melbourne? Hosier Lane is one of the city’s most iconic (not-so) hidden gems and home to the world’s most amazing street art.

3. Go on a Melbourne coffee crawl ☕
The city’s coffee culture is one of the best in Australia, and it’s safe to say that it ranks high on the list of world’s best coffee destinations. You don’t need to break the bank to experience the best of Melbourne’s cafe scene. Check out this definitive list of the best coffee shops in Melbourne CBD, put together by local experts.
4. Visit the Queen Victoria Market
See, taste, hear, and feel everything that makes Melbourne unique in one spectacular place. This 140-year-old market is home to a variety of produce, amazing eats and literally everything you didn’t think you needed (ie. 35 super cute succulents and some hot dog print socks).
Fun fact: Queen Victoria Market is the largest open-air market in the southern hemisphere!
> Located corner of Elizabeth St and Victoria St, Melbourne
5. Try Uncle Tetsu’s Japanese Cheesecakes

Be warned, this place is always packed with a line up of cheesecake-hungry patrons, and for a good reason. Uncle Tetsu doesn’t stock your regular cheesecake— it’s light, fluffy, soft and melts in your mouth. They only have three locations in Australia, and one of them is just a 4-minute walk from Atira La Trobe Street. Score!
> Located at 211 La Trobe Street and 55 Swanston Street, Melbourne
6. Take a trip to Chinatown
When you see hanging lanterns, bright neon signs, and an endless amount of delicious food choices, you know you’re in Melbourne’s Chinatown. If you’re looking for dinner that’s a bang for your buck (and your tummy), we highly recommend ShanDong MaMa– their hand made dumplings are easily one of the best in the area!
> Located at Little Bourke St, Melbourne
7. Have a picnic at the Royal Botanic Gardens
Grab a picnic basket, fill it up with goodies, and take some friends for a great day out in the sun. You can also sit under the trees to get some studying done or relax with a good book for some much needed alone time.
> Located at Birdwood Avenue, Melbourne | Open from 7.30am to sunset everyday
8. Go for a run at the Tan

While you’re at the Royal Botanical Gardens, why not go for a quick jog (or brisk walk) at The Tan, Melbourne City’s very own version of New York’s Central Park. It’s a great way to let your stomach settle and make more room for another round of grubbing.
> Located at Royal Botanic Gardens
9. Take a day trip to Luna Park and St Kilda

Melbourne might not be as blessed in the beach department like Bondi or Gold Coast, but St. Kilda beach is a gem of a destination with plenty of things to offer. Venture down Melbourne’s most popular seaside destination and enjoy the likes of Luna Park and trendy but affordable eateries like Pink Flake Fish n Chips.
If the water is a little too cold for you, it’s also a stellar spot to watch the sunset or see the little penguins by the pier!
> Located at 18 Lower Esplanade, St Kilda VIC | Luna Park is open 11am to 6pm Mon, Sat & Sun
